St. Louis Cardinals Roster Report 2009-05-16

St. Louis Cardinals Roster Report 2009-05-16
--INF Brendan Ryan played three games at Class AAA Memphis while he was on the 15-day disabled list as he healed from a strained left hamstring. RHP Mitchell Boggs, whom Ryan replaced on the roster, was 1-0 with a 3.22 earned run average over five appearances, including four starts, and the Cardinals won all four of those starts.

--Rookie SS Tyler Greene was in the lineup again instead of veteran Khalil Greene after T. Greene had had two hits and a stolen base the night before.

--Cardinals relievers have been called on do a lot this year and they have allowed little to happen while they've been in the game. Ranked first in the majors, the St. Louis bullpen has permitted just eight of 51 inherited runners to score.

--With the recall of Ryan from the DL, the Cardinals have six players who could play middle infield -- both Greenes, Ryan, 2B Skip Schumaker, INF Joe Thurston and INF Brian Barden. Schumaker, of course, also plays the outfield in the late innings.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RF Ryan Ludwick (strained right hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list May 13.

CF Rick Ankiel (sore right shoulder, head) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 5. He is expected to return as soon as he is eligible.

INF Brendan Ryan (left hamstring strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 30. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Memphis on May 12.

RHP Chris Carpenter (torn left oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He threw a bullpen session May 12, and he will throw a simulated game May 15. He could be activated in late May.

3B Troy Glaus (right shoulder surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He didn't heal as quickly as was hoped, and he may not play before July.

LHP Jaime Garcia (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He likely will miss all or nearly all of the 2009 season.
